Kirk was born in New York City and raised in Upper Montclair, New Jersey.
He attended public schools through ninth grade, and went to Delbarton, a Catholic school run by Benedictine monks in Morristown, New Jersey. Kirk graduated from Colgate University in 2000 with a Bachelor's degree in Peace Studies, then received his J.D. from Vermont Law School in 2004.
He practiced real estate and land use law for five years in Vermont while freelance writing on the side. He left the practice of law in the summer of 2009 to write full time. He lives in Woodstock, Vermont with his wife, Kate, and their children, Agnes, who was born in 2007, and Brian, who was born in 2010.
Kirk's background in peace studies and environmental law has been an undercurrent in his writing, much of which deals with issues of social justice and sustainability. He's an avid road and mountain biker, Nordic and downhill skier and fly fisher, and those pursuits have worked their way into his writing as well.
In March of 2011, Kirk joined the Tuck School of Business as a senior writer in the Office of Communications.
